1. What is the average gender pay gap in your country (in percentage)?

Based on the Eurostat gender pay gap definition, the gender pay gap in Austria was 22.2% in 2014, compared to 25.5% in 2006, according to a study conducted by Statistics Austria in the year 2017. This is considerably higher than the EU average of 16.7% (2014), albeit coupled with a relatively high female employment rate of 66.9% (2014).

2. What is the evolution of this gap over the past ten years? How do you explain it?

The most significant observed cause for the gender pay gap in Austria is the segregation of the labour market in terms of business sectors: a considerable number of women work in lower paid roles and sectors (such as retail). Along with a number of other characteristics such as education, age, seniority, full and part-time employment and - to a lesser extent- region and size of enterprise, roughly one third of the gender pay gap can be ascribed to structural differences. While the remaining two thirds might be attributable to gender discrimination, unobserved factors (such as admission and promotion requirements) may equally play a role.

3. Is the gap higher in atypical employment (part-time work, temporary jobs)?

Significantly more women are employed on a part-time basis. The number of women employed on a fixed-term basis is slightly higher than that of men. Both factors however tend to be more detrimental to men's earnings than they are to women's.
