Former ICC Counsel Ulrich Kopetzki strengthens the arbitration practice of DORDA

Tuesday, 2 April 2019

Ulrich Kopetzki (30) joined DORDA's Dispute Resolution Team at the beginning of the year, which had been awarded the title "Law Firm of the Year" by Chambers & Partners. The arbitration expert comes to DORDA from the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris, where he worked for more than 3 years. Most recently, he led as Counsel the German-speaking and subsequently the Eastern European case management team. He gained extensive experience in international arbitration proceedings under various legal systems, in particular in post-M&A disputes, joint venture, licensing and distribution agreements as well as in engineering and construction disputes, including especially FIDIC disputes.

The President of the International Court of Arbitration, Alexis Mourre, expresses his appreciation of the up-and-coming lawyer: "It was a pleasure working with Ulrich Kopetzki. He is an excellent lawyer and led his team very effectively. I wish him all the best in his new job."

Ulrich Kopetzki was able to deepen his international experience and expertise in the field of alternative dispute resolution in Chicago at the renowned Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University (Evanston, IL, USA). There, he was a Visiting Scholar at the Dispute Resolution Research Center and conducted research on negotiation theory and conflict management. Since 2015, he also lectures negotiation and mediation at various universities in Germany and Austria.

He completed his law studies at the University of Vienna in 2012. Already as a student he gained first work experience in the Corporate/M&A Team of DORDA. Later, he joined the London office of the prestigious US law firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP, where he was soon promoted to the position of a Visiting Foreign Lawyer. In addition, Ulrich Kopetzki is Regional Representative of the ICC Young Arbitrators Forum (ICC YAF) for Europe and Russia, a member of the advisory board of the Young Austrian Arbitration Practitioners (YAAP) and author of numerous professional publications.

Veit Öhlberger, co-head of the arbitration practice at DORDA, on the new hire: "Ulrich Kopetzki is a great asset to our team. His extensive experience with arbitration proceedings in German-speaking and Eastern European countries gained at the ICC will strengthen our practice significantly. We are very pleased that we were able to win Ulrich Kopetzki for DORDA after he had already worked for us as a student almost 10 years ago."

Members of DORDA's arbitration practice are deeply rooted in arbitration, both as party representatives for clients and as arbitrators. As a former member of the International Court of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris and as a member of the ICC's Commission on Arbitration and ADR, the law firm's founder Christian Dorda was able to internationally establish the firm's leading arbitration department as an award-winning practice. Florian Kremslehner and Veit Öhlberger continue the successful course of the practice together with their teams.
